About
our Research
We started this
project early this spring, and with help from our
dauther Cory, we were able to locate a record of Elmer's
birth at the Sherburne County Court house among some of
their old records. While looking, not only was his birth
record found but some of his brothers and sisters birth
records also were located. Marriage and death records
for others could also be located.
On Mother's day,
when Catherine and her family were visiting, we all made
a trip to Becker to the Sherburne County Historical
Society. There we were given a map from 1903, of Livonia
showing where August and Maria, and Olof and Christina
owned property on Lake Fremont.
With this
information, it was back to the Elk River Court house to
research the land records. Several hours and many copies
of land transactions later, we had the complete history
of their land ownership.
With information
from Bev Adams, and Agnes Valen, we took our first
research trip to Stillwater. We went to the Stillwater
Historical Society and went through the city's old
directories. We were able to first find them in 1873
living on William Street. During this visit, the person
in charge of the Warden's house, which is now the
Stillwater Historical museum, gave us as much
information as he could find. We went through death
records, and were able to find out the circumstances of
Anders' death.
We have made
additional trips to Stillwater looking for information.
One day was spent at the court house researching land
transactions, and birth, death, and marriage records.
During this trip, we were able to locate the place in
Sweden where Anders came from. This was a major
breakthrough.
They were very
involved in the church and we have been able to get a
lot of information from the churches they belonged to.
They became members of Trinity Lutheran church in
Stillwater on November 3, 1873. The church gave us
copies of all the records they had for the Nyberg's.
This included baptism records of the children.
We are now
researching the records in Sweden, and finding out about
family that we did not know existed.
All of the dates and
places mentioned are documented from Swedish records.
The spelling of the names will vary from time to time.
Our one stumbling
block is the fact that we do not read Swedish, but with
the help of a couple of good books we can do a word by
word translation. If anyone knows Swedish, we would
greatly appreciate having you look at copies of the
Swedish records that we have.
